American Express Bakery

The ''American Express Bakery'' is an 100-year-old business in Mumbai (formerly called Bombay), founded by a Goan immigrant, Joseph Carvalho. The headquarters and works are located in the American Express Bakery House on Clare Road, Byculla. Carvalho had purchased the property from a Jewish businessman in 1908.
The name was gained as a result of its speedy ("express") catering to American ships visiting Bombay Harbour. After many years, the name stuck and American Express Bakery was born. The bakery has since been in business for over 100 years, with no depreciation in quality.
The business has since passed into the hands of Joseph's son, Ross Carvalho, with his sons, Emil and Yvan Carvalho, taking over the day-to-day operations. They are still open from 9 to 8:30 from Monday to Saturday.
The business once ran several branches all over Bombay, but is now restricted to two branches, one at Hill Road, Bandra, and another at AEB House on Clare Road in Byculla. The AEB House, an Indian heritage building, is one of the only wrought-iron buildings still left in Mumbai.
The business is the last remaining significant Goan-run business in Bombay. Their products represent expertise in pastries and breads from all over the world. You can check out more information on their website, (americanexpressbakery.com )
